Sandwich Snacks for Year 3 pupils

Learning Opportunity Outline

A 'full day' learning opportunity for year 3 pupils to develop their understanding of designing and making with food and the importance of healthy eating. Pupils will make use of several of our Learning and Communication Zones at the CLC but in particular they will utilize our fantastic new 'state of the art' facility: The Food Research and Development Zone.

During the day your pupils will participate in a number of activities including:

• Learning basic food preparation techniques and ways of combining components to create simple food product for a particular purpose
• Tasting and evaluating various breads.
• Develop their designing skills by using their own experiences
• Develop their making skills by learning to combine components according to taste, appearance or texture to create a product that contributes to a healthy diet
• Develop an awareness of health and safety
• Learn that the quality of the product depends on how well it is made and presented

Maximum number of pupils.	This learning activity is suitable for 30 pupils. Your pupils will be split into three groups of ten in order to access the equipment in the 'Food Research and Development Zone' and ensure adequate supervision.
When is this opportunity available?	Throughout the academic year 2007-2008. Book Early to avoid disappointment.
Duration of the Opportunity?	This Opportunity takes a full day to complete – Your students will work in groups of ten in a 'carousel of activities'.
Where will your class work?	St Helens City Learning Centre - Rainhill
Expectations of the Class Teacher and preparations prior to your visit.	It is important that the 'Evaluating of existing products to develop ideas' is completed at school prior to the visit in order for your students to make an informed decision regarding their sandwich. Through prior discussions, students to have developed their criteria for their design proposals and suggest ways to proceed The class teacher will need to look at the resources the CLC has available to support the learning and teaching of the activity and be ready to use these resources on arrival at the centre or have prepared their own resources for use at the centre.
Expectations of the Class teacher whilst at the CLC.	Your class will be split into three groups of ten. At anyone time only ten of your students will be engaged in an activity with one of the CLC specialist Food Technology Teachers. The other two groups of ten will be engaged in work supporting this with you and your staff. The City Learning Centre has produced worksheets/workbooks and has a number of resources which can be used to support these sessions. The resources are non–ICT based with the exception of 'Food Stories' which are shown on DVD. The DVD will be set up in the Learning Zone ready for use. Each Session will last 1 hour. The CLC encourages the class teacher to bring resources to the CLC in order to support the learning in these sessions. If you require the use of a interactive board or PCs please state this at the time of booking as you will automatically be booked into a Zone with facilities for ‘paper-based learning' and the use of a DVD via a large display screen.
How will CLC staff support this activity?	CLC staff will deliver the making of the 'sandwich'. All zones booked will be made ready for your class.
Resources required.	Your students will need to bring with them their sandwich filling and their bread Students will need to bring a food container to carry their sandwich home.
Refreshments	Schools need to ensure that pupils bring a packed lunch and drinks (water only) with them if the learning activity runs over lunch time.
Travel Costs	The CLC will contribute half of the travel cost that you book through a competitively priced coach company.
